The Assumption That Everyone Shares the Goal
Collaborations proceed on the assumption that all parties want the same outcome. Frequently they do not. One party wants the project completed; another wants it to demonstrate their capability; a third wants it to end quickly. The shared goal was never shared.
Divergence surfaces during difficulty. When tradeoffs arise, parties optimize for different outcomes, and the conflict appears sudden. It was not sudden; it was present from the beginning, concealed by the assumption of alignment.
Establishing shared goals requires explicit articulation of what each party seeks. For those managing collaborations within their professional development strategies, goal alignment is a starting condition. Our alignment framework provides articulation approaches.
