The Expertise That Cannot Be Questioned
In some organizations, certain individuals become exempt from challenge. Their conclusions are accepted without examination because they have been right before, and questioning them appears to question their standing.
The exemption damages the expert as much as the organization. Unchallenged judgment loses calibration, because calibration requires friction. The expert who has not been contradicted in years may hold views that drifted from evidence long ago without anyone noticing the drift.
Preserving the value of expertise requires keeping it examinable. For those leading technical functions, ensuring that no one is above challenge is a governance responsibility within professional development strategies. Our governance framework provides challenge protections.
