The Feedback That Cannot Be Heard
Feedback delivered during a defensive moment cannot land, regardless of its accuracy. The recipient is occupied with protecting their standing, and the content of the feedback receives no processing. The provider concludes that the recipient is unreceptive.
The timing, not the content, produced the outcome. Feedback delivered after the recipient has had time to process the triggering event encounters a different posture. The same words, differently timed, produce reflection rather than defense.
Scheduling feedback around emotional readiness requires attention to the recipient's state. For those developing others within their professional development strategies, timing is part of the message. Our feedback framework provides readiness approaches.
