The Two Meanings of Being Available
Availability can mean responsiveness or it can mean openness. The professional who answers every message within minutes is responsive. The professional who welcomes unfamiliar questions and gives them genuine attention is open. These are different qualities, and organizations often confuse them.
Responsiveness is measurable and therefore valued. Openness is not measurable and therefore neglected. A team can be highly responsive and entirely closed, with every message answered and no unfamiliar idea welcomed.
Distinguishing the two requires attention to what happens when someone raises something unexpected. For those building collaborative cultures, this distinction shapes the climate within effective professional development strategies. Our culture framework provides climate assessment.
